Our Lady of Guadalupe
She showed up looking like the people she came to.
December 12 is the day the roses fell out of Juan Diego's cloak and the image was found on it. What made it land was not the miracle so much as the picture itself.
She is not a European Madonna. Her skin is the skin of the people she appeared to. Her sash is worn the way a pregnant Nahua woman wore it. The symbols on her dress read as writing to people who could read that language, and they said things about who she was standing in front of.
Spanish missionaries had been preaching in Mexico for ten years with very little to show for it. In the decade after Guadalupe, something like nine million people were baptized. She had said it in a language they already spoke.
