St. Padre Pio

Padre Pio was an Italian friar with a famously short temper who spent most of his adult life in a small town called San Giovanni Rotondo. He also had the wounds of the crucifixion on his hands, feet, and side, on and off, for fifty years, and doctors sent to disprove it could not.

The Vatican was suspicious for decades. He was investigated repeatedly and at one point forbidden to say Mass publicly or hear confessions at all. He obeyed without complaining and waited it out.

What he actually did, day after day, was sit in a confessional. Ten hours, sometimes more. People queued for days. He was blunt with them, occasionally rude, and they came back by the tens of thousands.
